Note to self

On Monday the 12-27-04 Riley turned 19 weeks old.
On Wednesday 12-22-04 Riley weighed 10.25lbs.
We got Riley on 10-9-04, and on 10-11-04 he weighed 2.9 lbs.

Ears and wrinkles

The last week or two I've noticed that Riley's right ear is cocked back, but the other one isn't. At first I thought it was like an expression, like he did that when he was curious or something. But it's all the time. See Riley here:

But then several days ago I noticed that if you look at the back of his head, the ear that is cocked has developed a fold in the back of the ear, which is why the ear flops back more.

Now what I'm wondering is, will he aways have one cocked ear, will it fix itself, or will the other one develop the same fold, too, leading to two "cocked" ears. It's so funny now he's like, uneven. And it's all the time. I don't care, I just think it's interesting.

Still no forehead wrinkles, but sometimes depending on the light it seems that the hairs on his forhead reflect light in such a way that it looks like forehead wrinkles are starting. But the skin is still tight and flat.

But he is getting other wrinkes, or more specifically: rolls. He's had a roll under his chain for a while, now he's got rolls behind his neck, and when he stands on his hind legs you can see three rolls of skin of his back under where his tail curls.

My breeder told me that she often breeds w/ a certain other kennel, and as you can see, those pugs are quite wrinkly in the body:

Grrr!

Riley pooped on the carpet today. It's my fault cuz he was barking at me and I didn't realize why. He barks at me all the time, so it's kinda like crying wolf, I never know when he has to go potty or when he just wants attention. I had just taken him out, but forgot that it'd been a while since he pooped. U think dog poo stinks? Somehow it's worse when it's inside! BLECH! Oh yeah, and then he ATE it! No more pug kisses for a WEEK!

UPDATE: It's now 1:13am and he's PEED on the carpet earlier, after the poo, and now DIARRHEAD ON IT! AND HE WAS **JUST** OUTSIDE!

UPDATE: 1:30am. I just don't get it, he'd JUST been outside! Since the first mis-poo, I've been taking him out about every hour or so. I had JUST been remarking to people today and yesterday that he seems to finally be houstrained for the most part. But now this. I am sick to my stomach from the smell!!! I'll NEVER get it out of the carpet oh my god. Cats are not this disgusting. I really feel like throwing up. This isn't funny anymore.

UPDATE: I'm calmer now. Bottom line is I love him to death and I'm not mad at him, just frustrated cuz I don't know what to do for him. He's all curled up in his crate for the night, and I am on the bed w/ the laptop about to crash myself. I hope this day is under the bridge and that he feels better tomorrow.

Riley update, random stuff.

Riley had his last shots today, including rabies. He was sore afterwards, but not like when he was a tiny baby. No yelping, just moving a bit slow. Then he slept alot, and was a bit warm. But he's ok now, playful. He's actually asleep again, but it is Midnight.

The vet said that the radiologist reported that there was aspiration in his lungs that night. So he had that panic attack near the water and when I turned around he was in it, I guess he inhaled some during his panic! He's SO scared of wet pavement or puddles. I don't know how to help him over his fear.

Riley is such an angel! We just love him so much!

I was noticing that the last few days his one ear has been in a different position than the other, it is cocked back a bit. Well yesterday I realized when I was behind him, that his one ear has developed a crease on the backside, which allows that ear to fall back farther than it's brother. I wonder if the other ear will do this or if this is something that will reverse itself. I took photos but have not downloaded them yet. Just lazy.

I signed up w/ Flickr.com, the paid "pro" version. I set it up so that I could send photos directly to this blog via email, email anywhere, even a camera phone, but the test post didn't work. Hmmmm.

Cold, yay

Riley seems to love the cold as I do! He hates going in the cold wet grass to potty when he's not awake, but if he's awake and he goes out in the cold, all he wants to do is play and run and run and run! So cute!

Note to self

Tomorrow (Monday Dec.19th), Riley will turn 18 weeks old.
On Dec. 14th he was 8.75 lbs.
He still has no forehead wrinkles.
He still squats to pee.
Heheheh.

Saturday ruckus

Riley is supposed to be resting, but he's just SO FINE and also going out of his skin from boredom. So we took him out today so that he could burn off some energy. I'll try to keep him relatively calm as much as I can, but the vet seems to think he'll be ok and I can't stand to see Riley that bored if he's fine. So off to lunch we went, to eat outside w/ the dog, then to the dog bakery to get a refill on homemade dog treats, and then off to the dog park .

Riley update

Riley's fiiiiine. He has not had any replases at all. I took Sasha for her regular vet appointment and talked to the vet about Riley a bit. He is glad, and not surprised, that Riley has been fine ever since and recovered quickly. I'll give it 'till Monday and then call him to ask when we can do his last vaccinations, etc. I'm anxious to get his last vaccs so I can freely take him to dog parks, etc., and also have the freedom to board him, fly him, and take him over the Canadian border when I want to.

Colors

There are MANY people who have pug blogs hosted at blogger that use the same template, so I played around w/ mine today to make it a bit different. I'm not really motivated to completely overhaul it, but I wanted to make it just a bit different. I already added the pawprint to the background, and then after that added the "Riley!" slanted text. But then today I decided to try to change the color a bit. I like the template, so I'll probably keep it, but I may play with the colors again before all is said and done.

Riley seems fine

Riley is still fine. He wanted so badly to go for a walk today and run and play. I did play w/ him, but didn't take him on a walk or let him go for a run. We just played on the couch and in the front yard, or he played by himself in the pen, or slept.

I still feel sad, and worry about him, but he is fine. No news from the vet yet.

Right now he's asleep with his head inside his triangle, snoring away, awwww!

I did some work on the site tonight. Now if you access this site using www.EverybodyLovesRiley.com, you will see a graphical splash page first.

I did have it so that the blogger blog loaded within a frame at www.everybodylovesriley.com, but that was causing problems with links. If you clicked a link that took you outside the site (another pug blog, petsmart.com, etc.), it would still say www.everybodylovesriley.com in the browser, which isn't good for navigating, bookmarking, etc.

Oh my gosh, thank you SO MUCH to all of you who have left comments and emailed us w/ positive thoughts and prayers after hearing about Riley's scare the other day. I can't thank you enough, it means so much to me (and Riley!). :)

Riley's feeling better

Off to bed, but a quick update: Riley really is back to his old self. Any breathing abnormalities are the ones he had before. He's really back to normal. I'll heed the vet's recommendation and keep him calm and not walk him for a week. But I'm glad to see he's back to being spunky and nutty. He spent a lot of time w/ me on the couch, I felt bad that he couldn't go out on adventures in the neighborhood today, so he spent lots of time w/ me on the couch playing "bite my hand" and, to borrow someone else's terminology I forget where I saw it: "pug of war". I guess I'll hear from the vet when he hears back from the radiologist. I take my kitty in on Friday, so if I don't hear anything by then I can ask. I'm just glad Riley is feeling ok. I'm tired, g'nite.

Riley gave us a good scare :(

Riley had to go to the emergency vet last night.

We were out on a short walk, not even a block away, and he collapsed and was gasping for breath and gurgling. He had pulled on the leash, I guess when he saw water in the ditch (he has an unexplainable fear of water and wet pavement), and when I tured around to see why he wasn't coming, he was on his side in the water. In less than a second he went from fine to that. I picked him up and ran him home and his gums and tongue were white and he continued to gasp and choke and try to breathe.

We had wondered if he had inhaled water in his panic, or if he had a piece of Greenie in his throat or if he had eaten a frog or got bit by a spider. I wondered if he was having a reaction to the flea treatment or heartworm treatment, both of which he'd had just a few days prior.

We ran him to the emergency vet and he took an x-ray and bloodwork. He said that he was deprived of oxygen (and I'm no vet so excuse my butchered version of this) but he said that because a second element of his bloodwork was also elevated, this meant that this was an ongoing thing, not just something that happened that night.

I told the e-vet that my regular vet wants to do Stenotic Nares surgury on him when he is 6 months old, could the stenotic nares be why (he has no nose holes to speak of so he doesn't breathe well) and he said "sure" and sent me on my way, with Riley breathing rapidly and shallowly.

I was scared and upset all night. I got about 2.5 hours of sleep. This morning he was much better but very subdued, and if you know this dog, subdued is a bad sign. But by late morning he was back to his normal rambunctous self though.

So anyway, we took Riley to his own vet as soon as they opened this morning (luckily M had today off) and my own vet said his lungs sounded clear and that there was nothing we could really do for him right now. He's going to send the x-rays to a... I forget the name, a specialist that reads x-rays? specialist for lungs? and he'll let me know what he says.

He also said that yes, this could be from the stenotic nares, but also it could be any combination of four breathing problems that are common in these short-nosed dogs:
* Stenotic Nares
* Elongated Soft Palate
* Everted Laryngical Saccules
* Hypoplastic (small, narrow) Tracheas

He said that Riley could be suffering from 1, all, or any combination of these (although we already know that the Stenotic Nares is an issue). He said to let Riley rest for 7-10 days, NO walks, NO excitement, just rest. And then if it happens again, he'll have the surgeon evaluate him to see if any of the above conditions are present and can be fixed.

I feel upset and worried, and inexplicably guilty, but I know it's nothing I did. I just feel bad. Like no matter what I do I can't protect him.

And let me just say: Emergency Vets are EXPENSIVE! We were already tight on money after the Ireland trip, and now so far this has cost about half a grand and it's not even over yet.

But he's worth it, and we'll get thru it.

More Santa Visits

Sorry it's been a few days. The first few days of the week were stellarly boring. Not a thing going on, and then Thursday and Friday I was SO weak and run down I was scared something was wrong. Then Friday night I came down w/ a full blown nasty cold. So Thursday and Friday were just my body trying to fight it off (and losing the battle). So I haven't even been on the computer much, and that's sayin' something!

Friday night we took Riley AND Crystal to a Santa pet function at another outdoor mall. (Photos to follow later.) It was a fundraiser for a local no-kill shelter. The turnout was 1/4 of what we saw two years ago and I don't know why, but it was still fun to go and see the dogs that showed up. Of course Riley was a hit, he even made it on tv! (Video to follow later.) But Crystal was almost as big a hit if not bigger! M brought her in her new Pet Pocket, and she was SO CALM! I would have never though that this monster crazy neurotic cat would stay calm in such strange surroundings! But she really does LOVE adventure, and she can't hear the dogs barking (she's deaf) so all in all it went amazingly well.

We were going to have pet photos taken w/ Santa (cuz it's a fundraiser, not because we need MORE photos with Santa!) but I forgot my wallet so we had to skip that part. But then when everything was winding down, the lady said she just HAD to take Santa photos for Riley and Crystal for free because they were just so adorable! So we got more Riley pix w/ Santa, and one of Crystal w/ Santa, who stayed totally well-behaved even out of her Pet Pocket.

Worn out

I never thought it would happen, but by the end of this weekend I was sick and tired of all the attention I get when I go out with Riley, LOL! We went to SO MANY pet events this weekend AND took him to pet-friendly restaurants and Dog Botiques and by the end of today I thought I'd scream if one more person stopped me to see the dog and ask how old he was, ask if he'll get any bigger, ask what his name is, ask where I got him, ask what I paid for him, and tell me how cute he is. LOL. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I think I overpugged myself this weekend! By the end of today I was like, walking fast looking at the ground when I had him and pretending not to hear people go "Oh! Look at the baby PUUUUuuuuug!". Hahahaha. I think tomorrow I will stay home ALL day and just clean the house (yeah, right) and leave him at home if I go anywhere. I just need a break from all the GLEE. Hehehe.

Meanwhile, Riley is out like a light, flat on his side w/ his ears flopped up, snoring away in his pen. Normally in the evening hours all he wants to do is play, but he is WIPED out! Awwww.

I especially love the photos of Riley asleep w/ his head inside his Triangle. He had a triangle just like it when he was a baby with his siblings, and he still seems to love that one the best.

Riley had one helluva busy day!

First we went to the local Pug Meetup (find one in your area!), and I took tons of photos as usual:

After that we went to a sandwich place where you can bring your dog if you eat outside. Great food, beautiful day out.

Right next to that place is a dog bakery and botique, so of course we had to stop in there.

But they didn't have the shirt I was lookin' for so we headed across town to the other dog bakery and got the shirt we wanted, as well as another cute decorative collar which I have yet to take a picture of yet (black velvet w/ a white bowties, looks like a tux). :)

Then we took Riley home and ran some errands.

After that we came back home and had to go back out, but we felt bad getting Riley all excited that we were home and just leaving again. So we packed Riley up and took him w/ us. After we were done w/ our last errand for the day, we called another restaurant that has outside seating but is not a big chain and asked them if dogs could come along if we ate outside, and their response was "absolutely, we LOVE dogs!". So we met up w/ mom at a great seafood and wings place with Riley in tow, who was so tired by that point he was a perfectly well-behaved angel.

I'm exhausted too!

And tomorrow M wants to go to the dog park early in the morning before going to a Christmas pet event at a local ice cream store in the afternoon and then pet pictures w/ Santa at the local mall tomorrow evening!

Christmas Riley Carols

Haha, we have the Christmas Music station on, on satellite tv, and I'm singing (sorta) Christmas Carols to Riley but changing the words to Riley-related words, and he's watching me intently and tilting his head! LOL.

Ours is at a local outdoor mall and afterwards M and I will head to a local sandwich shop that allows dogs if you eat outside. I'm hoping some of the peeps from the pug meetup will join us there.

Today I finally found a cheap (and not as nice) version of the pug statue that Riley was going ape-shit over and barking at that day in the Dog Bakery.

I brought it home and sure enough, Riley went ape-shit all over again, barking at it, etc. A total riot!

Seemingly overnight growth

Well, Riley didn't grow over night, be he seemed to grow instantaneously.

I switched from my glasses to my contacts today and HOLY COW is Riley big! I don't know if glasses make things look smaller than they are, or if contacts make things look bigger than they are. So I don't know which is reality, the glasses or the contacts. But lemme tell you, I was SHOCKED at how BIG Riley is! I have a feeling that the contact lens view is closer to reality since they are right up against your eyeball (just my theory) and if so, then let me say I had no idea how big Riley was! He seems huge to me now. Wow.
